Best Body Boot Camp: A Final Review

I wanted to put together this post to remind myself that I have come such a long way in 8 short weeks; it’s shocking! And to share my experiences as a first time participant in Tina’s Best Body Boot Camp.

BBBC has shown me that in 8 short weeks, I can not only change my body, but change my mindset. I set out with the goal that I was going to make it to the end, I would keep going even when the going gets tough, make this a habit not a whim, and use everything I learned to develop new workouts, new training plans, and a new lifestyle.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have dabbled in workouts, running and cardio for the last year, but this time it was going to be different. I was going to explore the world of strength training. This was completely foreign to me, but Tina provided excellent videos that I could follow along with [there were many days I had the video up and would watch the demo, complete that specific move, then watch the next move, and repeat].

I loved the community feel of BBBC, as well. Within our private Facebook group, members feel free to share their successes and failures with everyone and support is there. My biggest let-down [for myself] was not being active in the group more – this will change in the next round!

Personal Gains

Overall, I am much happier person these days since I have a way to eliminate all of my stress and worries. I lift weights and run them away! In turn, I have tons more energy. These days, I spend more time being active, but I love my runs and walks with my pup so we develop a quality bond that can never be broken.

Funny Pets Ecard: The best part of owning a dog is getting to leave places to go walk it.

Sizzle is my favorite workout buddy, she keeps me going when it gets tough and she loves every single moment of it. Maybe next time I can get a video of her ‘prance’ – head held high and tail up in the air, she is absolutely adorable. That’s not the only time she’s too cute…

Fitness Gains

Not only have I become a happier person, but I am seeing improvements in all areas of my fitness. My runs have become faster and I feel strong at the end rather than dying at the end like I was last December and even just 9 weeks ago.

My goals have now changed as well. Case in Point: the other day I was working on my current half marathon training plan and I ended up sidetracked – I was thinking about my first scheduled 5 miler last November. I had the goal to reach 5 miles in 60 minutes, now my goal is 5 miles in 50 minutes and I have succeeded! I’m hoping that getting back to my now-normal weekly 5 milers will help my longer runs as well.

Two weeks ago, I made the decision to take a BodyPump class at my gym. Best decision ever! Loved the class, format, music, and getting it all in before 7am = successful day!

Not going to lie, this class is intense, BUT I never would have had the courage to step foot into it before BBBC. And now, I am so happy I found it! It’s a great addition to my weekly routine, plus I can change things up a bit in my training schedules.

The one final piece of BBBC that I needed to complete was the original Fitness Test for 1 final comparison. So, here’s my results and progress:

If I have been able to spark your interest, today is your lucky day! Tina is offering the entire 8 week program for only $30 [that’s a savings of $10 off the regular price] and let me tell you, it’s worth way more than $30 or $40. Check out this link for your chance to make a difference in your own life. You know I’ll be joining up for Fall BBBC!

Weekly Recap: BBBC Week 8

Yes, its a sad day/week for me. Best Body Boot Camp is officially over. It’s been a journey that I undertook on a whim knowing that I needed strength training to have any hope of achieving my half marathon goals. At the end of this journey, I can look back and see where progress was starting to be made [like the first time I wasn’t completely dead after one of Tina’s workouts or when I completed all the suggested reps faster than I ever expected] and learning what the heck super sets and tri sets actually were.

Thanks Tina for setting me straight!

Ok, now I’ve got the hang of these. And they ROCK!

Unfortunately, this had to be the week that I end up fighting off sinusitis. I woke up Tuesday morning feeling absolutely miserable and knew that it was going to take rest, meds, and lots of water to get back to normal.

Monday: (AM) BodyPump + (PM) HOT! Yoga + 3.2 mile walk

Yes, I officially know what the craze is ALL about now! The absolute highlight was another girl in the class saying you could easily increase your weight 2-3x…thanks Tina! Hot yoga was just that…incredibly HOT!

Tuesday [aka my the morning where sinusitis tried to bring me down]: Walks with the pup

Wednesday: Walks with the pup + walk to lunch

Pure Pizza’s Margarita Pie – Not my pizza as I was feeling miserable, but I ate the same thing and it was delicious!

Thursday: Rest

Friday: Walks with the pup + walks to lunch & dinner

Yes, we ventured back to Pure for one last meal with my bro before he left town.

Saturday: More pup walks

Definitely proved this week that this is correct: Dog Owners are More Active! Read the article here.

Sunday: Rest

Total Weekly Miles: 9.52 miles

After such a low volume workout week, I am so ready to get back in the gym, wrap up my 8th week of BBBC, and pound the pavement [or rock out on the treadmill since I’m not 100% recovered] this week!

Weekly Recap: BBBC Week 7

Oh, the week after you return from vacation leaves your body in all sorts of weirdness…odd schedules, late bedtimes, bad eating habits. We all love and savor vacation, but the week after is always trying. We need to fix our schedules so we can be rested and ready for the week ahead, eat nutritious food to have energy, and get back on track with our workouts. It took me a few days before I was ready for weight training again, but once I refocused there, I was a much happier person!

How’d I gain my happiness [and sanity] back? Here’s a breakdown:

Monday: 2.8 mile walk to and from dinner

Tuesday: 2.41 mile run (27:29) before dinner and 1.86 mile walk after dinner

2013-07-30 20.04.15
I arrived home with some serious energy after work so I took Sizz on a run. Once Sizzle had her nap while we ate dinner, she was ready to go again! So, off we went.

Wednesday: 3.08 mile run (33:41) with NoDa Brewing Run Club

It still makes me smile to think many people doubted that Sizzle ran with me. They were all surprised when I shared that she runs up to 5 miles with me. We only did the 3 mile route, but both of us could have kept going!

Thursday: BBBC A + Yoga at Midtown Park

2013-08-01 19.30.42-1
Once again, I was ready to work out when I arrived home and BBBC was calling my name. Then it was off to yoga. I loved the experience having the city skyline in the background and outdoor yoga was awesome! Thanks Chandra from Yoga One

Friday: BBBC B

Best move EVER: The Breakdancer! image

Saturday: 7.12 mile run (1:28:27)

2013-08-03 10.07.59
Second long run in my half marathon training plan. Mental note: must update!

Sunday: 1 mile walk

Easy evening walk with the pup.

Total Weekly Miles:  18.27 miles

By looking back at this week it doesn’t seem that I was too far off from being active daily, but seeing that I didn’t start BBBC until Thursday makes me realize that I lacked some motivation and went with the ‘easy’ workouts [which are always running and walking] for me. Part of my drive for running/walking comes from my pup – I always know she’s game to get outside and exercise! Next week is Week 8 of Best Body Boot Camp…I can’t believe how fast this program has flown. The workouts always leave me sweating by the end, so no complaints that you aren’t getting enough out of them!

Weekly Recap: BBBC Week 6

Wow! Where has summer GONE!?! One minute its just arriving and the next, you realize it’s August and summer is winding down. I keep telling myself that it’s okay that it’s only August…summer really didn’t start until June here in Charlotte anyways…that it will all be okay and I will be ready to see the leaves change in a few months. Last week was the end of Phase 3 for Best Body Boot Camp and I was able to take my workouts to the beach! Ocracoke Island, to be exact. I absolutely adore this island and was excited to explore it with my feet in addition to a bike, and to spend a whole week there (last time I only was able to escape for 2 days).

Workouts of the week:

I tried to track how much I rode as well, but maybe short a few miles here and there.

Monday: 3.37 mile run (38:48) + 2.4 miles biking

2013-07-22 20.41.18

Tuesday: BBBC A + 4.2 miles biking

Wednesday: 2 miles biking + BBBC Core Circuit

This was our parasailing day, so we took it easy!

Thursday: 6.54 mile run (1:14:51)

2013-07-25 10.50.02

Friday: 4 miles biking + some beach time!

2013-07-26 19.51.53

Saturday: 5.14 mile run (1:05:31) + 3.1 miles biking2013-07-31 22.35.14

Sunday: lots of traveling (waiting for the ferry, ferry travel to the mainland, lots of miles to drive), but gorgeous views:

2013-07-28 10.28.03

Total Weekly Miles: 15.05 miles running + 15.7 miles biking

Overall, I’d say this was a successful week. I maintained my activity levels every day, while still working on my tan :o) I loved the week at Ocracoke and we are already contemplating when we will return again!

Weekly Recap: BBBC Week 5

We’ve passed the halfway point, and now we are on the downward trend towards the completion of Best Body Boot Camp. Where has the time gone!?! Earlier this week, we were tasked with completing the Fitness Test once again to track our progress…here’s my improvements:

Improvements BBBC

My biggest improvement [which was my primary focus] was in my 1 mile time; I dropped a whole 5 minutes of my time. Just goes to prove how quickly you can bounce back to your old self [and IMPROVE] when you haven’t been running consistently and the added positive impact of weight training! Even if I don’t improve in this area between now and the end of boot camp, I will be one happy person without a doubt. Now, on to how I’ve made the changes happen [at least for this week]:

Monday: (AM) BBBC Workout A + (PM) Pilates class

2013-07-15 17.21.21-2

Hooray for two-a-days!

Tuesday: 3.33 miles (40:47) in 97% humidity

I skipped my Tuesday am spin class to exercise the pup. Can’t say either of us were too thrilled.

Wednesday: (AM) BBBC Workout B + Core + (PM) Walking to/from Hot yoga (3 miles) + Hot yoga

Skipped the core circuit on Tuesday [I was DONE when I got home], but conquered it ALL today!

Thursday: 4.26 mile run (53:28)

Another hot, humid run = story of my life. Heat wave with high humidity…please GO AWAY

Friday: 1.5 mile walk

After a later night than I would have liked, I scrapped Workout C + Core for Saturday. I was still able to get in some walking time when we ventured out to Food Truck Fridays in Southend!

Saturday: BBBC Workout C + Core Circuit + 1.32 mile walk with Sizz (20:24)

I passed all those runners out there [rather they passed me] completing their long runs for the week and I was SO jealous, but I had to get back to pack for the BEACH!

Sunday: 5.8 mile cycle after the ferry ride

2013-07-21 21.21.17 (1)

Yes, this is the first of my cycling for the summer [and on Ocracoke!] and long overdue!

Total Weekly Miles: 13.4 miles on my feet [19.21 with the cycling!]

Yes, I have struggled this week with the high humidity and crazy temps – 80 degrees at 8:45am = No Thank You! But, I’m still happy I was able to get out there and accomplish a few challenges. During my runs, I am constantly convincing reminding myself that running in these conditions will not only make me a stronger runner, but I *might* see my pace pick up when the weather cools down into fall. I have some crazy, half-brained goals in my head for my upcoming half marathons…so I just have to wait and see how my training progresses between now and race day! Next week, workouts from Ocracoke!

P.S. Let’s not forget the short, but sweet celebration of Sizzle girl! We celebrated her 7th birthday on Monday, July 15th with a Peanut Butter flavored Frosty Paws🙂
